Divine Nails and Spa – 1558 Merivale Road

At first glance – when we pulled up to this spot I thought it could be a dive…the salon sign didn’t give me much of an impression about the salon at all. I walked to in to discover (what I thought could be a dive), an absolutely DIVINE salon spa.

Greeted by a pleasant and professional girl at the front desk and seated with a personable male manicurist, I felt like I was off to a great start. I looked around and the place was elegant yet cozy, clean, stylish and really inviting.

I needed to get my nails DID. More specifically – I had to get my gels off. I was pleasantly surprised with the knowledge and care that Philip – the manicurist – had to offer me. Even though he had plenty of opportunities to sell me on upgrades and products (because I kept asking), he instead gave me his recommendations to achieve my ultimate goal – to get back the healthiest nails possible. What other manicurist would turn your requests to spend money down? Instead, he suggested I let my nails breath and in 3-4 weeks to come back to get whatever I wanted.

I was extremely impressed with his professionalism and confidence that I would come back to their salon (and I will!). I was really appreciative of the care he took for my clearly damaged nails and after spending more than an hour with me – guess what my charges were. JUST TAKE A GUESS.

$22.60 – THAT’S RIGHT LADIES.  Can you freakin believe it? He got my poor brittle nails back to health (nail hardener and top coat included), exfoliated my hands with delicious smelling sugar scrub, finished off with a little hand massage with lotion and essential cuticle oil. ALL FOR $22.60.

AAAAND – I walked away with a goodie bag.

All I gotta say is that I am NOT going back to any other salon…and I suggest you guys check this place out too. Their prices are great, service is FANTASTIC and they even have spa parties with food and wine included (check their website). Also – just a heads up – they have an amazing product called Shellac – its a 14 day wear polish that does not ruin your nails like acrylics or gel.

Call them for an appointment: 613.695.8838 or visit their website for more info: www.devinenailspa.ca

Thanks guys, I’ll be seeing you again real soon!

Tasty Tuesdays – Best Sandwiches In Town

3 Aug 2010 In: Food

If there is one thing I’m REALLY good at making – it’s sandwiches. I LOVE sandwiches in every way possible – making them AND eating them of course. If I could choose one food to live with for the rest of my life it would be sandwiches – various ones OBVIOUSLY! :P

However…when I don’t feel up to making any myself, there is one place that I trust for my “love food“…DiRienzo’s. Even saying that word makes me salivate. Here’s the deal. There are 2 DIFFERENT DiRienzos in Ottawa, and some people like to say that one of them is an imposter – I’d like to make it clear that I don’t co-sign that statement AT ALL. I love BOTH locations yet oddly enough (well maybe because I live closer) I end up at the Meadowlands store.

  • One spot is in Little Italy (DiRienzo’s) – 111 Beech St. 613 729-4037
  • And the other one is on Meadowlands and Fisher Ave (but it’s actually called DiRienzo Foods) 1121 Meadowlands Dr 613-723-4664

Di Rienzo’s stocks an inventory of gourmet and specialty products imported from Italy but the real secret weapon is the sandwich bar and ready-made meals.

Both joints are MOUTH WATERING. But remember – I’m specifically talking about the Meadowlands location.

No matter which sandwich you construct, always, always, always ask for spicy eggplant. The buns are always baked fresh and you can ask for white or brown bread – which I really appreciate; Any kind of meat (and cheese)  you can think of: from turkey and prosciutto to chicken parmigiana or meatballs; And of course they have authentic FRESH Italian desserts like no ones business. They also have a pasta bar that you can choose from and fresh fruit as well if your going for a lighter desert.

Their direct competition is a place called Nicastro’s – but I don’t feel like that place is anywhere CLOSE to the D!

If you are as passionate about sandwiches as I am – or even if you want to satisfy a serious belly rumbling – this place is a MUST!!!!

The price range is between $6-$10 but the sandwiches are HUGE! You’ll be full for HOURS!

Bon Appetit!

Muzik Mondays

2 Aug 2010 In: Music

It‘s MUZIK MONDAY!!! I haven’t posted anything for a while – because I almost felt like there was nuttin to really post!

Here’s a hype song and even hyper video: FED UP. Dj Khaled is doing big things with Usher, Drake, Jeezy, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne. I almost like the video more than the song, but heyyy – what can I say except – that this video would also be wickid for video djing!

Watch Here: Fed Up by DJ Khaled “Fed Up” ft. Usher, Young Jeezy, Drake and Rick Ross (Director’s Cut)

This second song is the total opposite. Here, Wale gets DEEEEP baby! I absolutely LOVE the poetic flow of this (well…straight up – you can’t even call it a song)! It’s totally different and for some reason made me think of Tupac…although i don’t think he ever produced song-like poems of this nature. Anyways – Ambitious Girl makes me proud. It so speaks to me and I truly hope that Wale is this type of dude – because at the end of the day most of us strong ambitious broads can attest to  this – men are  mostly afraid of ambitious women.

Watch here: Ambitious Girl by Wale

That’s it for now! Send me songs and videos that you think are bomb or you think I haven’t seen or need to feature!

I don’t know about you but other than Modern Family, there is no show on regular TV that i can say I am in hearts with…

Soo when i’m in the mood it’s comforting to know I can turn to HBO  for my chill-tertainment needs. These 3 shows I absolutely LOVE. The acting is really good, they’re funny and dark – just the way I like ‘em.

1.)  HUNG

This show is amazing. First of all – the oldest profession on earth is being represented by  [PAUSE] …. a man. HELLS YEAAA ladies! LOL Finally – something fresh, am i right? This dude who is a regular Jo – a gym teacher by day – turns to prostitution at night to make ends meet after a series of unfortunate events in his life. He has a gorgeous wife who left him for a rich doctor and 2 odd kids who really add nicely to the show’s quirkiness. The dude’s pimp is a really nerdy girl who knows nothing about pimping but needs to grind because her job isn’t putting food on the table.

Love. This. Show.

2.) United States of Tara.

First of all – can I get a standing ovation for Toni Collette – who is the incredible star of the show!
She is absolutely one of the best actresses of all time. She may not be conventionally beautiful but MAN – can this woman ROAR!!! She plays a mom and wife of a beautiful family – who suffers from dissociative identity disorder (multiple personalities) that leads to her changing into any character at any given time…and as you can imagine, she does so in the worst of times. This show captures such beautiful moments between a wife and husband and a mother and her children that sometimes I get lost in their story. You will laugh, cry and feel as compassionate for their  situation-of-a-life as you would for your neighbor or a friend.

3.  Nurse Jackie.

The more and more I get into this show, the more and more I love it. This show is pretty dark – but has moments that really balance out with a great character called Zoey. Edie Falco – best know for playing Carmela in the Sopranos – stars as Nurse Jackie. The show is a mish mash of comedy and drama and a bit of that “hospital show” ambiance . I found that with this show in particular- with every episode the characters unravel and become more real and more raw. At first you meet Nurse Jackie and all you really know is that she is a tough New York, won’t put up with shit- kinda girl; But as the show unravels you will meet many different sides of her. The creator of this show really did a great job with the reveals…not too fast and not too slow.

Those are my favorite thaaangs today!

This is HUGE!! One of my favorite DJ’s is coming to Ottawa!

Philly based DJ, producer and 1/2 of Major Lazer will be blowing the roof off Ritual Nightclub for their 1 year anniversary bash going down this Saturday, July 24th.  On top of producing for the likes of M.I.A., Santigold, Spank Rock and Justice, Diplo remains a DJ at heart with his own unique infusion of dancehall, electro hip-hop, funk and reggae. Don’t miss this party, tickets are still available.

Look me up on Facebook or Twitter and Hit me up if you need tickets!!! (See links to my pages on the right hand side under Socialize)

Ritual Night Club is at 137 Besserer Street (across from Les Suites)

Tasty Tuesdays – Milagros Grill

6 Jul 2010 In: Food, Reviews

Just checked out this South American spot and I must say I really liked the ambiance of this place! I’m always saying that there aren’t many places in Ottawa that are cozy and nice to go to – this place is a “neighborhood” joint that is really cute, cozy and best of all – has a great little second floor patio! Roof top patios are my FAVORITE and there aren’t many in Ottawa!

The menu is composed of different Latin influences and is a good size. A lot of the time (in my personal opinion) when I eat at Latin restaurants  (like Mexi’s or something) I feel like there isn’t a whole lot to chose from. This place has authentic snacks like Empanadas (Savory Latin stuffed turnover), Flautas (Four rolled corn tortillas stuffed with chicken), Chimichanga (yummy stuffed tortilla) but also gives you the option of more sophisticated dishes like Swordfish or Brazilian shrimp stew or even tasty sandwiches  (Cuban, Latino, Frita).

They also specialize in all sorts of different tequillas! (wink wink nudge nudge) Just don’t get too carried away! We had a couple of shots of Patrone and felt it for the rest of the afternoon :)

Milagros Grill is in the centre of Wesboro (pretty much across from Bridgehead). Check it out if your looking for a place to go to on a nice day or for a nice dinner with a Latin twist!

Buen Apetito!

This song is a huge favourite of mine lately. This cat is doing BIG THINGS with his lyrics. The soulfulness of the song pulls you in and creates a meaning in your heart. I’m really feeling Aloe Blacc!!! This song is also the intro for one of the best HBO shows out there today – “How To Make It In America”.

I Need A Dolla – Aloe Blacc

His next album is scheduled to be released in September of this year.

Sex and The City

23 Jun 2010 In: Movies

Went to go see Sex and the City II with my girls and LOVED IT!!

I must admit that at first glance, it wasn’t love, but in the end it WAS really love! (I found the beginning parts to be a little cheezy – but as the movie went on I was too dazzled by my favorite on-screen girlfriends to notice anything else!)

I heard some reviews talk about the cheese factor as well, and I know what they mean, but really – what would Sex and The City II be without a little cheese? LOL

Even though I liked it – I’m not sure how I felt about the storyline. I’m not exactly sure what the “big picture” storyline was. Yes, there was some everyday drama that was familiar with the Sex and the City classic episodes; The kind of drama that everyone could relate to – marriage, kids, sex, love etc. But I felt like there was an underling message in this movie because it was based around the middle eastern themes of : oppression and freedom (or lack of) for women. I felt that this movie was SOO typicaly American. Samantha’s character especially (of course). Her lack of understanding of another culture was actually alittle annoying…No wonder the movie was banned in the middle east.

And Carrie’s drama with Big – come on! They aren’t 15 years old! Jeez! (Not gonna give it away, don’t worry!)

My favourite parts of the movie were the fashion of course and Carrie and Big’s apartment. (It was also the nostlagic moments that brought me back to my “love at first sight” with the original show).

BUT…With everything said – I must round this off by saying – I still loved the movie and I think its an excellent girls night event!!! It made you laugh, it pulled at your heart strings and if you don’t look for anything deep – just take it for what it is (ENTERAINMENT) you will love it too!

(For a) Girls night out I give it a 10/10

Oh! On a last note, my 10/10 is warranted by the fashion inspiration I get from Sex and the City. I walked away planning my next outfit and yearning to reorganize my walk in closet!
